Shaving Head

I have been growing my hair since March of 2000... 22 months. It's past my shoulders (right side like 2 inches longer than the left... bad trims... but not very noticeable). Anyways, growing my hair out has been a long experience, and I never did manage to get my hair to look the way I wanted. It was mainly a learning experience, in which I did a lot of things to my hair I shouldn't have. I am fed up with my hair, and am thinking of eventually shaving it all off and starting brand new. I want nice, healthy hair and feel this is the best way to get it, now that I've learned the right things to do. So after I get a little more practice, and think I have it down, I'll shave it and start growing it all over again. Has anyone else ever done this? Any suggestions?

Even though its my first time too, I wouldn't do it unless your hair is REALLY damaged. Some things can be fixed, deep conditioners, salon treatments, a lot. If I were you I'd try to improve its condition with every resource I might have. Maybe the thing is just to chop off some inches, shaved head puts you very distant from long hair... besides after having the length you have I'd feel very bad with a gross shaved head. Pamper your hair, tim off some inches but don't shave,

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try that for a while. Just a few minutes ago I cut about 2 inches or so off and it's amazing how much 2 inches really makes a difference... you wouldn't think it would. But it makes me feel very weird... so I can imagine what a shaved head would do. Anyways, if there is damage, it will all grow out, right?

Absolutely, see it like this, after 2 years you're probably in pony length, once I get there, they'lle need to chain me to cut more than 2 inches. Really, after 7 1/2 months I feel like never going back to shorhair, at least not as short as I had it for 19 years before I started to grow out. My point is, unless your hair is a wire, don't shave it.
You might need 5 months to make it look good, some trims, treatments, deep conditioners.. it doesn't matter, there are very good products out there. If you shave you're looking at a disgusting shorthaired look, another awckward stage and maybe 18 months of no pony... beware, REALLY. Good luck.

Just hang in there man.
Speaking as someone who is growing long hair from a shaved head. It is TORTURE. Months can go by and it is still short. A year from now it will only maybe be medium length.
DON'T shave it!
Maybe a minor trim...

Thanks for the advice guys. You're right, I'd go crazy if I cut my hair. The two inches or so I cut off last night I regret cutting now. Now it's going to be 4 months or more before I get it all back... ugh... my hair is really not damaged. I mean, at times it can be as soft as a feather, and I've never had a split end that I know of. It's just really dry, no matter how little I wash it the ends are always dry. But it is very soft. I guess it's just a matter of experimenting and finding what works for me. I figure whatever damage there is will all grow out regardless of whether I cut it or not. The only damage I can see affecting new hair is split ends and I don't have any of those. Thanks guys. Maybe if I can post a pic I will. Later.

Just as a note for your dry ends, its a problem some suffer, of greasy hair near the scalp and dry ends. You can fix it with a shampoo Garnier makes if it is that way. Otherwise try some olive oil.
