Something that might make both of y'all happy (for now) would be to do a "captain morgan" style. Check out the pirate at
www.rum.com . . . the way to tell your stylist to cut it is to say, "I want a 180 degree haircut." If they don't recognize that terminology, say, "I want my haircut by combing all my hair straight up over my head and cut off everything that rises 4" above the highest point of my head." This cut will give you lots of layers, will start with hair 4" at the very top of your head, and gradually get longer as you go down the head until you get to your neckline, where it will be 4" long plus however tall your head is (8" or so, for a total of 12"). If the hair on your neckline isn't long enough to reach 4" above your head, then whatever is there doesn't get cut; you'll get a chance to let it grow to Captain Morgan proportions. And you can let the top and sides grow out from there, and it'll look pretty good in the process.
Good luck,

will look pretty good

James, you can come visit my site for that purpose. For more than 2 years, I've NEVER thinned my hair, just very minor trims to keep it neat (which I only did 3 times in all).
But still, everybody's hair differs and I'd advice you to consult a professional long-hairdresser if you're really serious about it.
In any case, DON'T do layers or thinning, you'll never have beautiful long hair that way.
