Should ponytails hurt?

I've enjoyed putting most of my hair up into a ponytail during the week while I'm at work (~ 8 hrs a day). I have ~ 10 inches of growth and all the sides and top don't go into a hair tie. It doesn't feel tight when I put it in and I wait till it's all dry because hairs shrink as they dry. I wet it and slick it back after I tie it. After 8 hrs, my scalp starts hurting on top of my head. I've noticed on days when I don't tie my hair, my scalp doesn't hurt.
Is putting your hair in a ponytail bad for the hair or scalp over long periods of time?

You must be making the tail too tight which is bad for your scalp. Try making it looser(even if it does mean making it smaller) and then try to give it the wet look.
OK-thanx!

I find a big difference depending on which type of scrunchy you use. If your scrunchy is secure and the right size that will definitely make a difference for you. The best ones are on ebay.com. I have provided the link for you. This seller will make you any size you want, she does them in all different fabrics and does special orders for guys that want them small. Goodluck and don't pull too tight.
