Straighten me out...

I have a natural wave in my hair. But now that I am growing it out (first time - age 54 - white hair), it is too wavy and is curling at the ends. It is just beginning to touch my shoulders. My wife suggested getting it straightened - so it lays better and will actually appear to be a bit longer.
I am willing to do that - with a professional - but I would like some opinions first. I have been on this board, reading, learning and posting for a couple of months and have come to trust much of the advice that you all share.
I know that a chemical treatment is not great for hair, but this will only be a one-shot effort - I should not have to do it again because the weight of longer hair will (should?) pull it down. But, what advantages and/or disadvantages do you forsee? How will it look/act 6 months from now? Anybody out there with any experience?
TIA,
Bill S

I do perms all the time at the hairdressing school, and see the after effects all the time on the lol (little old ladies) with the thio perm solutions there. I wouldn't have any qualms about using a thio straightener, especially as a one-time treatment. I still don't trust the sodium hydroxide relaxers, mostly because they damage hair more. If you absolutely have to get all the curl out, however, find a hairdresser experienced with the chemical relaxer. If you can get along with half to 3/4 of the curl removed, I'd go with the thio.
