How important is The Preening Element ?

I'm starting to wonder just how important a part the preening element might play in having long hair ? For both sexes ?
My own thoughts are that there is a definite therapeutic side to it as it seems (for some reason) to reduce stress and tension levels. If this is even remotely true then what better convincing economic argument for men to be forced to grow their hair long in today's stressed out modern world ?
