Insane wavy hair...help!

...Hey yo,
I was just going over a bunch of these old messages, I really don't know what to do with my hair. I hadn't cut it since December of 2000, but then I got it trimmed in November or so of 2001. I guess its back to where I had it before I got it cut in November. The hair is about 6 inches (bangs and sides), the back isn't quite as long, but it is insanely wavy/curly. The back especially, at the bottom, it curls and sort of lifts upwards...I don't really know what to use to keep it slicked back. I used to to use a cheap pommade, but this stuff was really really hard to wash out so I stopped using that. (Was the cheap pommade the reason? Or is this stuff just for long hair?) I was going to try American Crew fiber but it is pretty pricy and if it is hard to wash out like the pommade was, I don't want to bother.
I guess you could say I'm at the awkward stage right now, but I don't really want to have death metal long long hair...but I would like to somehow keep it at the current length or maybe a little longer. I've seen some cuts that are layered and they look pretty good on wavy hair but I'm not sure that my hair would get this way. What should I do? I hate when the sides stick out and the stuff from the top doesn't stay flowing down but rather curls/bunches up and it just looks blah!
Right now, I am using a hard gel (by AG) slicking it back and using some hairspray (by Aussie), but that makes my hair really hard, and I don't want that. I was using American Crews daily shampoo and conditioner for a while, and that was pretty good but now I'm using Physique's deep hydrating stuff, just until I empty the bottles (its supposed to help my hair, but I don't see much difference). Also when I come out to the shower and my hair dries, it looks pretty bad, I wish it would just work! Stupid wavy insane hair.
AGGGGGHHHHH! Frustrations!

i am a hairdesser by trade (no i'm not gay before anyone asks i use it as an opportunity to meet women!)i also used to have the same problem and there is no simple answer you have to go through a trial and error process. generally speaking keeping your hair in a good condition will improve manageability. for me this means shampoo and conditioning every other day and deep conditioning once a week. also john freida frizz ease serum helps a lot especially after showering and other products in the range to keep it in place. try not to use cheap products that will dry your hair. use a shampoo and conditioner that will condition deeply, ones designed for colour treated hair condition very well. it may seem all this product crap is a lot of girly nonsence but it rearly does help. STAY THE COURSE

Yah . . . if you read the list of ingredients on the label, it will most likely say it has mineral oil (baby oil), petrolatum (vaseline), and lanolin in it. I grew up in the 70's when "The Wet Head is Dead" look was big, and never did appreciate "greasy kid stuff" like the (then) older folks did.

Read the list of ingredients on the American Crew stuff, and if it's loaded with vaseline and baby oil, it'll do the same as the cheap stuff.
