hair extensions for guys?

I've kept my hair cropped military short for several years but am an admirer of long hair on guys and would sure like to experience it for myself. Do any of you have experience with using extensions to bypass that "awkward" stage? What sort of reactions did you get? I'm 40 and work as a manager in a hospital environment in New England where I'd get some reaction, but it's generally fairly tolerant (I change facial hair options almost monthly - moustache-to-goatee-to-scraggly beard cyclically), and I've more than proven myself professionally. The dramatic change might not be such an issue, but I'm wondering about the feasibility of extensions -I'm blonde and silvering and wonder if it would look awful or not wear well while my hair is growing out over the next 1-2 years...
Any advice is appreciated.

Also interesting when you say you've more than proven yourself professionally. When my hair was about shoulder length in the late 70's I hadn't proven myself professionally at all which led I think to a degree of inner uncertainty in some way ? But after I'd proved myself professionally in the late 90's having long hair today (mid-back and non-stop!)definitely makes me feel much easier about the whole thing.....complete indifference to the outside world sums it up just nicely !
It's just for some weird reason this inner confidence to grow it long seems a whole lot easier for some guys more than others. Whatever, I really wish I'd had this much confidence as a teenager then I'd never have wasted time becoming just another professional lol !! ;-)

I wanted long hair ever since I can remember. So 10 yrs ago, I stopped cutting it. But it would grow only 18". I wanted it lots longer. I got a local hairdresser to put in 30" extensions. I love it . I have done it 4 times. When I am around people who disapprove of my long hair. I roll it up & pin it so it isn't very noticeable. I don't like peoplr to hassle me about my hair, so I do what I can not to offend them. I have plenty of other times to enjoy my hair
