Gels, hair spray damaging?

Hi all,
I'm currently on the tail end of the awkward stage and have been using gels and hair spray to control my hair for work. Can these products be damaging to my hair in the long run? I haven't really seen any problems yet, no split ends or anything.
My bangs extend down to my mouth and I've been growing for about 11 months from a close to shaved head (yugh!)
Thanks!

Is there any chance of seeing a pic of your bangs' full length?
Thanks

Scott, whether a gel or hairspray is damaging to the hair depends totally upon its ingredients. I am the owner of a men's grooming resource center and swear by the American Crew line because it contains no waxes, bad alchohols, etc. causing flaking or build-up on the hair. All the product line is water soluble so it rinses off the hair or (in the case of heavy duty gels/pomades) shampoos out leaving no residue.
Other contributors to this board will probably recommend other products/product lines with which they have had success. The main thought is to use a quality product.
