I don't know if it's considered long, but whatever.

I'm totally torn on my hair right now. I've had a shaggy look all my life and it's as much a part of me as my eyes or feet. For basic dimensions, think about 3/4 of the way down the neck, about halfway over the ears, and halfway over the eyes in front. Very thick all around, dark red color (never been dyed).

First off, I haven't heard any bad things about my hair until recently when a couple people told me I look like a bit of a nerd/geek with my hair. I've never heard of mop tops being described as dorks, but whatever. Just out of curiosity, what do you people think the connotations are?

And to my question: I'd like to grow it out more, ending about shoulder-length but the same on the sides, front, and top -- just enough to not make it a mullet. The problem is that it's only the back that needs to grow and everything else is fine. If I cut what I've got already to maintain its current length, I'm scared that it'll look like a huge bushy clump in back.

My other problem is that I've got two tendancies: One, my hair grows out more than down. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about... it's hard to describe. Around the temples it gets thick and stupid looking. The other problem is the little curl in front when it gets real long; you know that little lick on the side? How should I get around those?

Help would be greatly appreciated, even though it's not technically long hair. If I had to pick, I'd say medium-length, but 99% of hair sites out there are for the trendy almost-shaved look. Thanks for the advice.
