sideburns (sort of) question

i've been growing my hair out for quite a few months now, i'd say aprox. 5-6 months... the front is down to my mouth, and the sides a little below my ears. my mom seems to think i should get my "sideburns" trimmed up... now i don't have alot of facial hair, so it's just hair hanging down where normal sideburns would be, 'cept longer. should i just leave it like it is or go get it like normal sideburns?
thanks alot,
SMM

You can still have long hair on the top, sides, and back while trimming up the sideburns. All you really need to do is comb the hair along the hairline between the ear and forehead forward, then trim the shorter hairs right along (or maybe a little bit beyond) the hairline. When you comb it back, it'll look pretty good, IMHO. Keeps the bitty straggler hairs in check, blending with the rest of the hair.
