Does wearing stocking cap hurt hair?

Hey I think I've found my solution for getting through the awkard stage. See I have very thick hair that tends to curl at the ends. After a shower, when it dries, it has that "big" look that I hate so much because I want my hair to be tight and flowing down. So recently, I've been wearing a stocking cap and after 30 minutes or so, when I take it off my hair is very straight and low on my head. I love it. It looks thin and isn't so big. I was just wondering if I shouldn't do this anymore? I didn't know if wearing this hat hurts my hair. I mean it's not tight on my head at all. It just keeps the hair down on my head and prevents it from frizzing up. I also realize I can put gel in my hair so I wouldn't have to wear a hat. My ultimate goal is to be able to get my thick hair into a ponytail. Right now the bangs are down to the end of my nose.
You sound like me..

Cept my hair naturally is pretty thing and doesn't look too "puffy" except on the very ends on the back. I too wear a beanie, and I don't think it would have any negative effects..It's starting to get too warm, I may resort to gel here pretty soon..:)

Can't see how wearing a hat would hurt. When I was younger I'd do the same thing in the awkward stage.

Sounds like a plan to me . . . I work on old ladies who have been putting their hair up in plastic rollers and then hot-air dried for years, and it's doing just fine. Something you might try is when the hair is more or less damp, comb the hair straight and put the stocking on your head, then let it dry completely (maybe with a blow dryer to speed things along). Afterwards the hair should be nice and straight (until it gets wet again, of course). Add a little bit of styling lotion or gel while it's damp, and the hair should hold straight a bit better.
