What to do with hair in P.E.?
Posted by gilee on March 13, 2002 at 15:40:34: Previous Next
Yesterday my class started P.E. We are in there for an hour and a half and you can imagine I get pretty hot and sweaty playing basketball that long. The only problem is that the harder I play and the more I sweat my hair starts to frizz out. And I hate it to look like that the rest of the day. My hair is all long enough yet to put in a ponytail. Are there any other suggestions that I can do to keep my hair from getting to out of control but still play??

what about wearing a bandana or dew rag over your hair. Keep a spritz spray bottle in your locker and give your hair a nice spritz after gym, then comb it through, that should take care of the frizzies, and if its just a light mist it will dry quickly.

We aren't allowed to wear hats, bandannas, or anything covering up your head.

Would they allow you to wear sports headbands?
I just got some Adidas headbands from a sportswear store, for my Tae Kwon Do class.

Really? Even when playing sports? I'd think keeping your hair out of your eyes would be a safety issue. What do the football players think about not getting to wear helmets?
You're not talking about fashion, man, you're talking about protection - the issues are very different. Rain hats might be a good idea when it is pouring out. Hats with earmuffs might not be a bad idea when it's ten degrees out. Hats at high noon might also not be a bad idea if you're out very long, what with the ozone hole and all. Masks might be a good idea when fencing. When the issue is protection, a rule against anything on your head is not only stupid, it is dangerous.

The football players are allowed to wear helmets and basketball players are allowed to wear headbands too when they are playing a game. But when were just in the gym playing during school we can't. I know becuase somebody else wore won and they made them take it off. It's stupid I think. I think we should be able to wear anything on our head whenever we want; hats, bandannas, headbands, whatever. It will have no effect at all on what you learn.

The hazard in both situations (game or practice) is just the same, so the only other legitimate concern they could have is one of fashion or image. So you can break their fashion rule when hundreds of people are watching, but not when almost nobody is? This is nonsensical unless something else is going on, and I'd bet it is: They are discriminating against (i.e., disrespecting) some social groups at the school. You aren't in Littleton, Colorado, perchance?
