hair clips & damaged hair

I just found some leather braided hair clips for men on the net that are 2.5" to 3" long. The hair clips I've seen in the store for girls are metal. Metal damages hair by cutting into it when it's part of a ponytail holder. Would it have the same damaging effect on hair clips since it's not compressing the hair as much as elastic hair bands?
