straightening?

i've been growing my hair for around 6 months... i have really wavy/curly hair, and it's very hard to manage right now (i'm in the awkward stage obviously). what about straightening? i've heard it will dry out the hair, but i have very oily hair... would it still be bad for me to do it? is it going to affect hair growth rate, or damage the hair badly? the person i talked to that works in a beauty shop or salon, whatever it's called, said it wouldn't be bad for my hair. comments?

I am at 15 months and have wavy hair. Yes it sucks. Use some alcohol free gel and style it. Doesn't matter if you like it or not. I was thinking of getting my hair straightened but glad I didn't because now the weight is starting to hold it down. I still use some gel not near the amount I used to. Did it harm my hair? No. Make sure it is alcohol free and you wash it out often. I really like the studio line melting gel. It makes hair stay in place but not stick together.

my suggestion is to use a flat iron...also called a straightening iron...i have wavy, coarse hair, and it makes mine just as straight and smooth as i want...and it stays that way until i wash it or get caught in the rain.
to checmically straighten your hair is pretty damaging...i used to do that in the late 80's early 90's....it did quite a bit of damage even though i always got it done in a reputable salon.
other will say the flat iron will damage also...and it *can* but it *won't* if you use it properly.

I think you shouldn't try to use a straightening iron.Your hair will be damaged soon.Wait until it gets longer and more manageable, by now you can wear a hat.Irons can be found at shops who sell electric home products or big supermarkets.

I had my hair straightened about a month ago and it's only help the way it looks and feels. The salon used a thio creme (basically perm solution) on my hair, and it did not dry my hair out. I have pretty dry hair too, but I still don't notice any change in the moisture of my hair. The only changes in my hair are that its straighter (obviously), softer, and easier to style. In fact, I can shampoo and condition more often now without my hair feeling as dry and coarse. I would definitely recommend getting your hair relaxed. It'll definitely help during the awkward stage until your hair has enough of its own weight to hold itself down.

If you have your hair straightened, definately do the thio straightener and not the sodium hydroxide relaxer. Thio is much easier on the hair.
