Got a Trim. Can I Still Make It?

I've posted here before, so you may recognize my story. I was an idiot and cut off 15 months of growth on November 5, 2001. I am posting this on April 23, 2002, and I'm regrowing my hair with trims every 2 to 3 months. My goal is to grow my hair down to at least the middle of my back.
Today, I went to get my second trim. It was the same barber that trimmed my hair the first time. (On the first trim, she took off 1/2".) She asked, "How much do you want to be taken off?" I told her less than half an inch.
I don't know if it was the fact that I said, "I'm trying to grow my hair out a little" when I meant "a lot", or that I told her to cut the sideburns to make myself look more clean cut, but she cut off MORE than half an inch on my sides and back. For example, if I combed it over, the hair on my sides could cover a part of my ear. Now, it can't. At all.
Lucky for me, I have pictures of myself from November 5, April 22 (yesterday), and April 23 - after the trim. Could anyone tell me if I can still grow my hair out at this rate? The largest pictures of me are the "after" pictures, the medium ones are the "before", and the smallest one is the one on November 5.
Take note that my hair grows about 3/4" a month. (I eat lots of protein and biotin.) So how often should I trim, and how should I trim it? Now that my side and back are considerably shorter, I'm thinking about keeping my hair on the same level as my bangs. In other words, when my bangs reach my nose, the sides and back will be at the nose too.

if you ever want to have hair of any decent length, you will HAVE to STOP getting trims so often...i understand the desire/need to have hair looking good and neat...believe me. i don't want some big ole' rats nest on top of my head! i get it trimmed every 4-6 months...NO MORE. but honestly, you have got to let it actually grow some.

I agree. If you want it to grow, you'll need to:
Get trims very rarely. At your age, your hair is healthy and strong! A trim ever 6 months is more than enough.
Don't get a cut from this same person again. He/ She is cutting way more than they should or need to cut. Find someone who respects long air.
When getting a cut, don't be ambivalent or uncommitted about what you want. Demand, in no uncertain terms, the cut you expect. Tell them exactly (no beating around the bush) what your plans and goals are for your hair. Make it clear that if they plan to cut any more than 1/4", that you will seek someone else.
And next tme, if the person cutting your hair cuts too much...DON'T PAY! Period! That's the only way to send the message to stylists/ barbers!
Be upfront, honest, and completely blunt about what you expect...no, what you demand of them. This stylist may have thought you wanted your hair just slightly longer - since you failed to be direct with him/her.

Some people just want to plan their hair growing process perfectly, but that's very hard to do; the best thing to do is to just let it grow! I'm typically the type to plan things out also, but I just let let time do its thing instead. It takes a lot of discipline, but that's the best way to do it. After the topmost hairs on your head reaches at least chin level, THEN you could start thinking about the way you want your hair to look. Until then, HAVE PATIENCE.

When my bangs reached my chin I trimmed the sides and back perfectly even with them and that looked nice. My hair is now near shoulder (my desired length) and its all even and good looking. If your going to trim anymore, wait till you have about 10 months of growth.

You must forget about trims for at least 8 months for the following reasons:
1- They make the awckward stage longer.
2- They cost money that can be used to buy good hair products.
3- If you go with barbers you'll probably find the old fashioned man who hates your long hair. Or a stylist that thinks he knows better than you what you want.
4- Unless there are split ends, there is no rea reason, just to even up, but not untill you get to the desired length
5- Scissors and clippers are our hair's worst enemies, why expose it to them more than twice a year.
After a year you'll be happy you trimmed the least as possible, just condition it well, care about it and you'll probably be safe from split ends for ove a year.
By the way Tim, you look young in the pics, how old are you?

Hi! Thanks for the help. I really appreciate the advice from everyone. I think I'll listen to you and get trims a lot less often.
Since you asked, I'm actually a whopping 18 years old. I know I look a lot younger than my age, and I think it's because I'm half-Chinese, half-Caucasian. The white part in me gives me the large eyes while the Chinese part gives me a rounded face, leaving me looking like a lil' kid.

HEY!! Sorry about that post I made the other night about me thinking im gonna cut my hair- i definatly arnt!! LOL!! i was tired and stuff that night.
Anyway Tim, DO NOT TRIM !!! only after 4 months then just do the back and keep like that untill the sides are level with the back.
Also, when growing at the length it is now, I wouldnt part it, just leave it really scruffy- this looks really good and it looks like it hasnt grown but when u comb it out and add a prating when it starts going in your eyes- you will notice how much its grown- also, without those trims- you'll have long hair as fast as you can grow it!!

Bloody hell! I know exactly what that's like...I went and had a forced haircut (I was...mmm...17 at the time, yes) and specifically told the lady to trim it at LITTLE. My hair was maybe nose-length in front and not quite collar length in back...and when she was done I had less than an inch of hair! In the middle of bloody WINTER! Needless to say I have NEVER gone there again and I've had only one haircut since then, in early July last year (a prerequisite for going to Newfoundland with my grandma. Bitch) Luckily, I'm 18 now and I guess the 'rents think I can do what I like with my hair...the last cut was nice and sparing and left me with enough length to make me happy. And now? Well, it's chin-length in front and maybe seven inches long in back...yay! It moves forwards, not backwards! Upwards, not forwards! And always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!
