"Big Hair" question
Posted by Dun do Bheal on June 04, 2002 at 21:08:15: Previous Next
I've always been lazy about cutting my hair (I usually cut it really short) and am overdue a haircut by about 2 months, but I started toying with the idea of growing it long and have decided to give it a go. The only problem is that when my hair gets longish it sticks out at the sides. Is there any way to minimise the bush look without making it too obvious that you're trying to control it? How long does it need to be before it can be brought somewhat undercontrol? It's almost three inches at the sides and is about 3 and a half inches on top.
Was having a look at the reasons why people decided to grow their hair long - my reason's a bit strange. I was thinking about how I would look with it long a couple of nights ago, but not really considering it (it was cause I was thinking about how much it needed cutting). That night I had a dream that I did have long hair - I could see it and feel it. It was weird but I really liked it, so I've decided to go ahead with it.

Hey man, the bushy problem when it gets longer is the same problem I have had for years and is the reason why I get so far growing it long and then end up cutting it. I am now on my determined attempt that I am going to definetly have long hair down past mid back if it kills me no matter how bushy it get's. The thing I find is best for me is to shampoo wash it only once a week, but rinse wash it with warm water through the week while trying not to rid it of it's natural oils. I also use what has been around for some time now called "Alberto V05 Conditioning Hairdressing" It comes in a tube like Preperation H. You can get it at Wal-Mart in the Health And Beauty Section. You squeeze a little or however much you feel you need into your hand and run it all through your hair. It moistines your hair laying it down and leaves it managable. Go for it , man, and no matter how bad it seems, just be patient through the awkward stages of growth, which is where I am at now. In Christ and God Bless!!!!!

After it gets longer it will stop doing that, you just need to wait it out. It will be worth looking shitty for six months or so, because it will look how you want it forever after that (unless you cut it)

It really depends on what type of hair you have..softness, straight-curly, thickness, oilyness..
Asian hair is especially prone to that stickout problem, at the back and sides. I knew an Asian guy with relatively short hair that had to wear a hat every morning or his hair would stick up everywhere. So he had a "hat line" all day at school. I told him to quit whining and grow it out, it'll lay down. He didn't want to, said it would look stupid.
Next year, hes growing his hair out, its 3-4 inches. Doesn't stick out anymore. "Told ya so."
He used gel or mousse to control it for like 2 months, and then it would lay. Styling gunk works optimally on that kind of hair thought...if you aren't Asian or white with straight-blond or straight black hair, then that wont be nearly as effective. You know, the hair thats so straight that its an afro when its short, unless its soaking wet or full of gel or something.

That's because Asian hair has a thick circular cross section, and can stick out straight.

I had the stick-out problem for about 18 months after I had my last major chop in Feb 2000. I was determined to grow out my hair. Initially I just plastered it flat to my head with mousse (so it looked like I had it in a ponytail from the front anyway!) but when it became too long to do that, I used a styling spritz. It looked fantastic and a cyclone wouldn't have shifted it but it was as hard as a rock and was horrible to wash out. Eventually I found that going to bed while my hair was still slightly damp (not soaking wet!) and pushing it flat down the side of my head would work. I still do this now and, even after sleeping my hair still looks as though it's only just had a comb put through it.
It is interesting that you dreamt of long hair as well. This is also partially why I grew my hair because I used to dream of it quite often.
