split ends

Hey all,
I've been having a problem with split ends recently. My hair was last touched by scissors in June 2000 and the ends are now a mess. I don't want to lose any length but something needs to be done.
Do you think that I should maybe trim 1/2 an inch to an inch off? It also seems like my growth rate is really slowing down. If I trim it will it make a big difference?
