How can you tell?

I understand that a split end is when a hair splits in two up the shaft of your hair. However how can you tell it is a split end and not just two hairs stuck together? You may well then pull them apart and not realise whether it is a split or indeed two hairs.
Hair is so close together anyways is a split end worth worrying about?
Previous point more than last point needed to know an answer for.
