Beating the girls at their own game...

I am growing my hair long, and one of my goals is to beat the hair of my female classmates. I have straight black hair (Very convenient!), and I've been growing my hair since January 2002. Since January, I have had only 2 trims.

I'm going to get a trim sometime this week, but I'm not sure what to tell the barber. During my last trim, my mother told the barber to have my hair "layered" (Whatever that means!). She also spoke of having my hair in "one length".

I want to be different from other men who grow their hair long. I don't want it to look messy. I want it to hang from the top of my head, parted at the middle, covering the sides and the back of my head. I don't know how to describe this style, though, so this is a bit of a problem.

A barber told me that I should get an undercut because it looks better on men. Huh?

This is one of most annoying aspects of being a straight guy in my country - PEOPLE AREN'T VERY OPEN WITH YOU ABOUT LONG HAIR! Hm... Maybe I should ask my gay classmates...

One of my biggest problems right now is that I don't even know HOW to accurately ask questions about my hair! But I'll just try:

1.) What is this awkward stage that I keep reading about? How long does it last?

2.) What was my mother talking about?

3.) How should I tell the person cutting my hair about the hair style that I like (I don't even know how to describe it!)?

4.) What is an undercut, and how is it supposed to make me look better?
