Not using shampoo

I have seen a lot of posts about going periods of time without shampooing, but I want to know if there are any effects from this. It seems like it would get dirty, but I havent used shampoo for awhile now, and just rinsing it with water seems to be enough, and my hair is in much better condition when I dont strip the natural oils out. My mom says that If I dont wash my hair I will get a scalp infection. Is this true? I know theres a such thing, but is it really brought on by not using shampoo? Anyway, I hate the way my hair feels after using shampoo and I want to stop altogether, as long as there are no long term effects. Is shampoo just for removing excess oil, or does it actually prevent diseases in the scalp or something? thanks in advance.

I myself believe there are no health concerns to worry about with not using shampoo. The natural oils in the hair keep not only the hair healthy, but also the scalp. Rinsing out with water was the only option for people back before shampoo was invented. I myself only wash with shampoo once a week and that's for church because I play bass guitar and sing in the praise band. Otherwise, I wouldn't use it at all. Conditioner is good, though.

Other side of the fence: I stopped using shampoo for a while and just used water and the effect was horrible. My hair got very brittle and greasy. Thats my experience.

Dude Im the same way! If you dont like washing your hair go with dreads! Thats what I did. I once went 3 months without washing my hair when it wasnt dreaded. But it got really nasty and there was serious build up if you know what I mean. Anyways you dont get a disease unless you live in a really dirty place. Trust me I didnt even get lice and I still havent. Go with dreads man, theyre hard to take care of at the beginning but then its really easy and girls love them!!!

I stopped shampooing every day and switched to twice per week, Mondays and Fridays. I soon discovered that my scalp became itchy and stayed itchy even after shampooing. So I started using Nizoral
(1% Ketconazole). It stopped the itching, and I also discovered that this is a very nice shampoo, about the best I ever used. It beats Aussie, Nexus and the other popular brands. So I shampoo every other day with Nizoral and condition every day, and am very satisfied with the result.

I've had really good experience so-far just washing my hair with a small amount of BABY shampoo... it gets your hair cleaner than just water but isn't close to as harsh as most retail shampoos. My hair comes out feeling REALLY nice and shines quite brilliantly... I wouldn't recommend dreads... I *personally* think they're disgusting!
