Slow Progress

Hi,
I had my last haircut in the first week of December 2000, and 18months later and much to my suprise it has grown very slowly. It is currently 7inches long so I guess it is growing about 1/3 inch per month, but in the last six months in has been even slower. I am still trying to hang in there, but my problems at the moment are:
1) When I get up in the morning I have an extreme case of bed head. I can form a small 2" 'tail, is this the best way to prevent this?
2) Most of the longer hair can be styled OK with a slight wave, but the smallest hair (approx 2-4") is all over the place and is very kinked. Will it always be so, or will it go away naturally, or does it need cutting/styling?
3) At the back, I don't think it looks great. It is much more curly at the ends, so I have very curly ends on essetially straight hair, will gravity eventually sort this out or could a cut help?
4) How long does my hair need to get to be officially clear of the awkward stage?
I'd appreciate any advice.
thanks,
Graeme

I can answer number 4 for you. I have read at http://www.choisser.com/longhair/ (go there, it's great information) that to really begin to look longhaired, which I myself haven't officially reached yet, you need to reach nine inches. Which is also the length at which to make a ponytail. So, I figure he means nine inches all around or somewhat I guess. Anyway, hope this helps! Keep up the fight, dude!

First of all, don't cut it. That will only prolong the awkward stage (which you are still at). The good news is that at 7 inches you shouldn be out of the awkward stage soon.
: 1) When I get up in the morning I have an extreme case of bed head. I can form a small 2" 'tail, is this the best way to prevent this?
- You can try several smal lbraids, starting as high up your head (ie using as much as possible of the 7 inches). Don't make them too tight, and take them out in the morning. You should find that this encourages your hair to hang downwards and look as though it is meant to be in in a long style with some curliness.
: 2) Most of the longer hair can be styled OK with a slight wave, but the smallest hair (approx 2-4") is all over the place and is very kinked. Will it always be so, or will it go away naturally, or does it need cutting/styling?
: 3) At the back, I don't think it looks great. It is much more curly at the ends, so I have very curly ends on essetially straight hair, will gravity eventually sort this out or could a cut help?
- These problems will both go away is you continue to grow it
: 4) How long does my hair need to get to be officially clear of the awkward stage?
= A bit longer yet, but it sounds as though you are nearly there. Happy growing!
