i'm getting a lot of silver in my dark mane. does anyone have experiance in coloring their long hair? i am thinking of using a color rinse to make the silver streaks into possibly red/purple. is this doable/advisable/a tremendous pain in the ass? any feedback is appreciated.
thanks

Personally, I think that some silver streaks in long hair looks cool. I guess that's up to the individual. Sorry, I don't know anything about coloring hair. I'm a redhead and wouldn't dare to compromise my natural color. When I get older I still don't think I'll ever color it. I think that even grey hair (on men) looks good long.

I use "Just For Men" gel. It's the gel primarily used for temples and beard. What I do is mix up a solution of it and apply it only to the grey areas in my hair. This way I don't color all of the hair, only the parts I want.
The gel is thick, and applying it where you want is easy, especially when you get used to it. I sometimes use the dark brown/ black and at other times the light brown. My hair thus has several close but not identical colors (the two colors, one slightly lighter, the other slightly darker than my natural shade of brown, with just a few grey strands here and there) for a very natural, not colored look.
This way I minimize the grey and keep a natural look.
Tip: The box says leave on for five minutes. Trust me...make it ten! Five isn't enough for resistant grey hair.

Ok, ashamed to admit it, but....i guess i can trust you guys with this:
it was my birthday and a friend said she wanted to dye my hair as I had been sorta thinking it over.... She bought the stuff and presented it as a birthday present, so I had a hard time saying no. It was a color gel, not dye. so, she said it would wash out in 30 washes or something along those lines.
Well, that was about 100 washes ago. It PERMANENTLY took away my hi-lights that were natural around the front (that is until they grow out) and it totally changed the texture of my hair. It is not nearly as silky as it was (it feels DEAD) and worst of all, it barely covered the grey, but I didnt have that much anyway. So, all in all: not a good experience for me. I can't even begin to imagine what Permanent Dye would have done. I would rather have the grey and my regular hilights and my regular texture than this dark hair that has reddish casts to it in strong light and does not look natural at all.
By the way, the color my hair turned out was nothing like the box showed. My hair is very dark brown, we went with med. brown and got almost a jet black with red cast. Not good.
Exacly what happened to me

I dyed my hair with a semi perm, it said LIGHT BROWN, even showed a swatch that looked like what I wanted. Well I left the stuff on for not even half the time it said, and it was too late & my hair was jet black. Also very damaging for not using ammonia & proxide. I'd stay away from colors but now my hair is half black & half orange from the roots that have come in. Guess it should be done proffessionaly

I've been having my "grays" covored PROFESSIONALLY for about 6 years. My hair always feels better and is in better shape for a couple of weeks after the color.
If you want to color, pay the money to have it professionally done.
