Styles for the Semi-Bald

Hope I found the right place. I'm a 42-year-old guy, completely bald on top but with plenty of hair left on back & sides. Every time I ask a stylist for advice, I get the same line: "lose the volume and cut it short." Frankly, I *hate* the idea that I have to spend the rest of my life with a quasi-military close crop. Are there any good-looking *distinctive* styles for the crown-bald that allow for some length and volume? (Websites with pictures especially appreciated.) Thanks --

Hate to say it, but I really don't think so.
Combovers look horrible. Hair pieces just as bad.
If it were me, I'd just go with a shaved head. I love my long hair, and I don't dream of ever cutting it. But if I find myself in your position, I'll be over with my friends at the buzz board sharing my head shaving experience.
I'm sorry you're in the position your in. It sucks.
Ever notice that many people with abundant hair shave their heads, and those who want long hair lose it? It's cruelty!
Good luck to you. Hope you find something that works for you.

Whaddya embarassed for? You're among friends here!
I've known alot of bald guys with ponytails and I think it's a cool look. Very down to earth, approachable. And the beauty thing is, you don't have to grow it as long to get all your hair in the tie. I'm still waiting on my bangs and it's a pain!
Hope that helps,
The Rev

I tend to agree with the Rev. I've seen guys with total top baldness and ponytails and I think it's a cool look. Esp. combined with facial hair. I mean, grow it where you can, ya know?
It's totally a matter of what you want to do, but I tend to agree: a shaved head is not the answer to baldness on top. I used to cut hair for a bunch of people (not professionally, and don't get me started on the laws against that) and many of the guys were thinning or bald on top. I ignored it and just cut their hair the way they wanted it. I think the more you try to hide something, instead of working with your what nature gives you, the worse things end up looking.

First of all, odn't be embarrassed- there's a lot of semibaldies out there, including me.
The current fashion diktat is that baldies should shave off the rest of their hair and look as though their baldness is merely a fashion choice. But there are many of us who have no hair on top who grow out the rest. It looks fine loose or in a ponytail. Often the terminal length is not so long as it would have been when you were younger, so you never need to consider if it is longer than you want it to be. Also, there is no awkward stage as you can get some kind of ponytail much sooner as The Rev (Hi, Rev) says above.
I have grown mine for 8 years with no trims and it is the length of hair not the baldness that people seem to notice.
Good luck with whatever you decide and be proud of yourself.
