Question for Rokker

Hey Rokker. I believe you mentioned that you get occasional trims. I thought that I'd reached my 'terminal length', but don't really think that's true. Due to a bad shampoo (for a while), I've gotten some damage -- many split ends. In fact one side of my hair actually seems to be longer than the other. I hate the thought of getting it trimmed, but; my hair used to be longer and now it's kinda' spazzing out in the back (curly, etc. -- it's always been straight -- naturally). I haven't changed my grooming habits, etc. it appears that my hair is just damaged. Does trimming the split ends help to continue the growth? I've heard that there is no cure for split ends -- except trimming (even from my mom). It sounds reasonable, though I hate to do ANY cutting. What do you (and others) think?
Another ? for Rokker

Rokker, I've seen you mention before that you use a "cocktail" of leave-in conditioners. Which ones do you use and how do feel that using more than one benefits you?

Well, not sure about what Rokker uses, but every now and then I use a conglomeration of three conditioners: Loreal multi vitamin conditioner (the one with the green cap), a St Ives conditioner, and whatever else tht would be laying around. I would apply this stuff generously (and I mean putting a lot of it on) to my hair and leave it in for 20-30 minutes, then rinse it with very cool water. The results were amazing- my hair would have a very nice, healthy shine to it. Check out my post about my progress pics down a bit- the one pic where I was playing a guitar was taken several hours after doing this conditioning treatment.
Not sure if it would work for everyone, but I'd at at least try it once to experiment. No harm in that, is there?

Nym, I must be blind because I didn't see your progress pics, or at least one of you playing a guitar. When did you post it? The only reason I was asking about using more than one leave-in conditioner at a time was because I was wondering if it would really weigh your hair down and also, would you get lots of buildup from using so much at a time. But you're right, it is worth a shot to at least try it. I'm always open to trying something to improve the look of my hair.

Oh, and the conditioners I used aren't leave-in conditioners...very important!

Trimming split ends does shorten it - one of the laws of physics - but it does prevent the split from spreading further up the hair and causing more damage. I get a trim of about a quarter of an inch every 10-12 weeks and it leaves the hair looking much neater and healthier. My hair grows 7-8 inches a year so I'm sacrificing a little over an inch of that to keep it looking the way I want it to.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I usually never log on during the weekend.
If your hair is uneven and/ or has unhealthy ends, definitely trim it up. Find a stylist you trust to cut off as little as needed. Remember, a small loss now will be a big reward later!
I don't think it was the shampoo that did the damage you have. I believe it may have been how you were brushing/ combing the hair.
My recommendations....
Get the trim. You'll knock off the bad stuff, even if it means losing a bit of length.
Shampoo twice a week. After shampooing, use a conditioner. First use a regular conditioner. I use Suave shampoo and conditioner. No need to spend big bucks here! Then use a deeper conditioner. I recommend Sofsheen Breakthru. I had a helluva problem with split ends until I started using it. After applying the deeper conditioner, don't rinse! Get out of the shower, put on a shower cap, and leave it in for about 30 minutes. Then rinse and gently towel dry.
I do this on Sundays and Wednesdays.
If you can avoid it, don't even get your hair wet on the other days. I use a clip to hold my hair out of the way and don't even get it wet on other days.
This should help.
Also, to answer another question about my "cocktail" of leave in conditioners. I use the Softsheen Breakthru leave in along with another leave in (can't remember the name, but I'll get it for you). Along with that, I use a little jojoba or olive oil....just a dab! I mix it all together and apply it to my hair, brush it, and let it air dry. If it's excessively wavy or curly, I use my straightening iron to make it look better!
And that's it!
Once every two months or so, it's a good idea to really deep condition. Believe it or not, mayonnaise works great. Apply it, comb through, put hair under a shower cap, leave it for an hour or so, then shampoo as usual. You'll eliminate (or severely reduce) breakage and split ends.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, man. Sounds like good advice. I guess I'll have to deal with a little trim, but I'm sure my hair will be better for it in the long run (hopefully resume growing as well). Take care.
