I was mistaken for a girl today

It is the first time it happens. I am only a four-monthers. I was at the food store, and the cashier said : "Hello madam." Then I answered : "You mean hello mister." Then she looked at me and said : "Sorry". I think it was because she only had a quick glance at me the first time.

i get this a lot, last night as a matter of fact at target, the clerk was even looking at me eye to eye at the end of the checkout line. i don't know if people just assume that someone with longish hair, pushing a cart with a toddler in it must be a woman or that they just don't pay very good attention, but i don't wear makeup, in fact most days i have at least two days growth on my face, my hair is not that long as measured by standards of this site, but it does fall between my shoulders and shoulder blades and styled in sort of a modified shag with no bangs, so i don't think that there is anything too fem about me or my hair. i hope that it is just an oversight on peoples parts, but i am sure that sometimes it is a case of sexism, particularly when i am pushing my son in a cart or stroller.

...I've also people see it to be PLAIN MEAN!
They knew all along it was a man but wanted to get a
'message' across. Haha
They can always get away with it though because they can
PRETEND they really did NOT know. Haha again. I hope
all their kids grow up to be Xtra-LONGhairs

I had a teacher in high school who used to call all the longhaired guys, "ma'am." (I was short haired then, myself.) Then he would excuse himself for the "mistake" by saying it was the hair that misled him. It's a really TIRED, OLD STORY. Adults were pulling that one on teenagers in the fifties!
I don't know what makes people so insecure around those who are different. Looking back, I wish I had responded to him with, "HE looks like a woman to you? Who have YOU been going out with?" Or something to that effect. Oh, well.

Maybe they are just stupid people that try to be mean by pretending that they thought I was a woman.

Some of them make a genuine mistake. Yet others just want to annoy, and the best is not to give them that satisfaction.
The other day I got into the bus, and suddenly I heard loud exclamations from two guys behind me. They were speaking in their own language, not realising that it's my language as well. So they went: "Hey it's a guy!" followed by idiotic giggles. Then: "Nowadays it's difficult to identify male from female. Just imagine if he had a child - it would wonder who was mother and who was father"
Now in their case they were making loud remarks confident that I wouldn't understand - the language not being the common language in those parts. I was tempted to make the obvious reply, but decided not to border on the obscene.
Prejudice, that's all there is to it

Here's where subtlety shines. A few years ago I was with my wife shopping for pumps at a lady's shoe store in Dallas. Two men were also shopping for shoes, conversing with each other in Russian.
As we passed past them on the way out the store, my wife nonchalantly said, "Hello" to them in Russian. They automatically greeted her back, and then they had the most incredible double-take I've seen in a long time. It was great.

i think some people do it just to be jerks about it, and some MAY make an honist mistake, hey even *I* have done it
i remember seeing a really short, really skinny guy with LONG hair and thinking it was an attractice woman untill he turned around HAHA that sounds more funny now then it did then
thing about people doing it just to be jerks is they don't relise that Long Hair guys are more masculine than them because cutting your hair only makes you look like a slave since at one point only slaves had buzzcuts
strange i never was mistaken for a women before
but i'm 6' 3" and have a pretty big build so lol i don't think i'm ever gonna have that problem

I work in an amusement park and run rides. While doing so a dad said something to his child like "let the girl help you" and when I turned slightly the family sort of laughed at him. I don't really mind, I could probably be mistaken as a girl from behind if I had short hair as per my build and some of the women's short hair-styles I've seen. No biggie.
