Hi,
It depends on how you do the ponytail, how often and what you use to hold it. I have seen lots of photos of hair loss because of long term wearing of tight ponytails. If you wear a ponytail a lot or pull it back so that it puts pressure or stress on the scalp or use a non-hair friendly clasp or clip...yes...you can definitely suffer hair loss.
Everyone has their own opinion. I have seen too many photos with hair loss at the hairline where the ponytail had applied the pressure with resulting hair thinning and loss.
Regards,
Karen

I notice that you said, "at the hairline". Pay attention the next time you put a ponytail in your hair. If you are not careful, you will find that the most tension is on the hairs around the perimeter of the tail. Add to this the weight pulling on the top hairs and the most tension is on the hairs along the hairline. There is a simple solution to this. First, don't make the pony tail so tight. Second, when you tighten it, pull apart only the hairs in the middle. This serves to even the tension between the center and the outside.
A high tail will also have more tension than a low tail.

I agree with Karen. According to a news article I read somewhere about two or three years ago, when the hair is pulled into a tight ponytail, the strain on the hair follicle can damage the hair follicle and cause the hair to stop growing or fall out.
I guess a way to avoid losing hair is to avoid tying it back too tight. To keep it in a loose ponytail, you may need to grow longer hair. This could be another reason to let hair get longer.
