Time is necessary

Time is necessary

Today, almost two years after allowing my hair to grow out (it's mid-shoulder blade--I'm 42), I was pushing my hair back from my neck, and I realized, in that moment, how natural my hair feels, like it has always been this way.

And it occurred to me that it has taken these two years (which really seem like no time at all) to get into the place where long hair is mind, is me, and feels natural.

The point of my post is that all the anxiety that gets posted here about how to make hair grow faster, how much longer until it's really long, how I cannot wait until it's really longer--while all that is something that most of us have done--is really necessary.

You have to do the time. Living with your hair the way it is right now is the only right place to be. And the way it is right now will ead to the way it is tomorrow (which, when it arrives, will be right now also). And evenentually, when your hair is as long as you imagine now you would like for it to be, it will be you--and you will will feel good and natural about it, and the anxiety will be gone.

The anxiety you feel right now would still be with you if you could wave a magic wand and make it instantly long now. It would be a different anxiety. It would be the anxiety of having hair that wasn't you.

This business of waiting and growing is the fire that you have to walk through. I think it may be a right of passage--not a contrived one like frat hazing or other artificial initiations--but a natural one, created by your own body.

So, look in the mirror, and love your hair like it is right now. It;s the only way.
