Itchy Scalp

Hi!
I started growing out my hair about two years ago and it is now past my shoulders. As it got longer, I lengthened the time between shampoos from every day to (now) about every 5 days. I would like to get to a week between shampoos, but after about 3 to 4 days, my scalp starts to itch. Wetting my hair will relieve the itch for a day or so, but then it starts again and forces me to shampoo, which relieves it.
Any guidance from you guys (or gals)? Is it oil build-up that is making it itch? Or dry scalp (I don't seem to have dandruff)?

My vote goes to OiL build up on scalp...
Nature's way of saying: Time to wash me : )

Thanks! Well, I guess whether it's microorganisms (ewww!) or oil buildup (yuk!), I'll never get to shampoo once a week.

The itching is probably due to microorganisms that are starting to grow in the warm moist environment of your scalp. In warm weather, it is amplified a bit. You are lucky that there is no dandruff, but it may develop. Dandruff is primarily a result of fungal or microorganism development on the scalp. Too much oiliness might contribute to the environment. You may want to wash a little more often.
I had a similar incident and some wise people on the board turned me on to Nizoral shampoo. I used it as directed and it wiped out the mild dandruff and itching I was experiencing. You use the stuff three times a week for eight weeks and you're done. Then you just use it periodically as needed.
I also happen to be in a microbiology class at the moment and the teacher agrees with the microorganism/itchy theory I learned from the board.
