I want to grow my hair

Hello,
I just found this message board, it's great. Ok. I've always had short hair, right now it's buzzcutted. I want a change, I've never had long hair before. However, I have thick hair, not furry like, but thick and that curls eventually when it becomes longer. Now, can I do this or will it just "pile" up. I've also considered wearing a bandana during the "funky" phase. Any advice would be greatly appreciated .. thanks

Welcome aboard! I just returned, myself, after an extended hiatus.

Hair tends to follow its own, natural "pattern" of growth, whether straight or curled. My advice is to let it get to the "funky" phase and see what it's doing then. If your hair has a natural curl, then you may wind up with a bevy of beautiful long curly locks (in which case I will have to hunt you down and kill you - just kidding. heh). If your hair has a natural wave (i.e. not completey straight), then you're in for one hell of a treat. If it's naturally straight, then prepare to enjoy relatively low maintenance.
Whatever happens, the only way you can control the shape of your hair is by manually styling it. My own experience has taught me that allowing my hair's natural flow to compliment my already good looks (I can't think of any way to describe myself without sounding egotistical, so I'm just going to admit that I am - hehe), rather than forcing it into some kind of feaux style (i.e. a perm) has allowed me a much greater sense of joy in having long hair.
The only thing I have to concern myself with now is regular washing and split ends.
I hope that helps. Good luck!

Thanks .. I don't want to end up with a mullet .. =) .. Another question .. in theory, no matter how thick your hair is, sooner or later, gravity will kick in and the hair will go down, right ?

Yes, most definitely. The hair will become so heavy that it will succomb to its own weight, and begin draping your back instead of flipping up and away from it. That's what happened to my hair. It began lying down by the time it reached my shoulders.
