Long-haired teachers?

I was wondering if there were any teachers on here, and if they experienced any difficulties in the teaching field because of their long hair. I have been working in the IT field for the past couple of years, but it's too unstable for my liking. So, I've decided to go into education. I had one longhair teacher once; my calculus teacher in high school.

I teach Science. I have not received any pressure from administration.
But here are some things to keep in mind:
1. I was hired with very short hair.
2. I did not grow mine until I was tenured.
3. I proved myself with short hair first.
4. I continue to do my best.
There are teacher shortages in certain parts of the countries. I'm sure you'd have less trouble getting a position where they actually need teachers. There are two universities with education colleges in my area, thus they can be picky about who they hire (unless you are licensed in an area of need....such as physics.)

I am a high school math teacher with midback length hair. I was hired with short hair in 1988 but started growing it out in 1995. I experience no problems with the hair at all. Once in a while I will get the old, "Why don't you cut your hair?" bit or "Why don't you tie your hair back and get it out of your face?" I simply respond, "Oh, I'll think about it". And that's it! As a matter of fact, some students even ask about it like, "How long have you been growing it?" or "Do you mind it falling down in your face?" or the like.

I am a teacher. I teach Latin--secondary ed. I have had no problem from administrators, parents or kids about my hair. Mostly there is fascination, I think, and this is a rather conservative community. I do a good job. Kids like me, which means their parents are happy. My hair, so far, is not an issue. I've been teaching 13 years, and had long hair for two.

I teach English in a public high school in southeastern Virginia. I started this job in 1999 with a high and tight. My hair is now to my shoulders, a style that I think looks best on me and that I'm very comfotable with, but my hair has been as long as four inches below the shoulers. Rarely does anyone say anything negative. In fact, the kids look through old yearbooks and make comments like "Man, don't cut your hair off like it was it that yearbook picture." Like the other posters, I do my job well and parents are happy so the hair is a non-issue. In fact, I don't even have the longest hair of any male teacher in the building.

I'm a middle school teacher with a tail about halfway down my back. I've worn it this way for about five years with no negative comments, but had close-to-shoulder-length hair for at least five years before that. However, I think Mick's points are important. My inspiration was a high school teacher in the same district in which I teach who wore a tail for years before he became the principal (then he cut it!!).

I think its so ridiculous how some people make a big issue out of long hair...i mean my God, it's only freakin hair!! Their are other things people ought to worry about. It's just pathetic and ludicrous how some people get when it comes to this! People have nothing better to do than worry about petty shit! If some people are going to criticize men for having long hair, then they might as well criticize women as well, because there's no difference...hair is hair whether it's on a male or female...it's all the same thing!!! I just can't wait for that one day when long hair on men becomes prevalent again!
Not a teacher, but...

Hi,
i'm not a teacher, but I work at a elementary school for two hours a day. My hair is long enough that if I use some gel, I can get it into a decent tail. I haven't gotten any grief from anybody at school, but finding a job full-time is an on going struggle. Overall i think schools are fairly accepting. The funny part is I get a lot of little kids that a curious and ask questions. Most memorable are a kids who was convinced that boys couldn't grow long hair, and a girls who observed that my hair was longer than hers. I had a history teacher who was balding, but had mid shoulder length hair. He even bleached it once. Apparently, he didn't have any problems.\
Cheers,
Evan
