Lurker's Progress Report

Well, I've been following this board for a while now. I think I may have posted once or twice before. Last haircut I had was back at the beginning of March, for a play that I was in. Around that time I also met a stylist who understood that I want to let my hair grow (it's my midlife crisis I guess - it's cheaper than a convertable or an 18-year-old.) :)
Anyway, it's been growing ever since, with only one very minor trim back at the end of May. I find that daily shampoo and conditioner helps (the conditioner is a MUST with my hair) and I've observed that my hair seems to grow in spurts (although it's more likely that I just *notice* it in spurts.) Every few weeks I'll suddenly notice that it's gotten to another point - into the ears, into the eys, etc.
I also noticed that it gets curly down at my neck. I don't know when my hair decided to get all wavy; it was never like that when I was younger. Maybe it's punishing me for shaving it all off a few years ago. I can get most of it to lie down by brushing it back wet and letting it air dry (or spritzing it with a little styling spray and brushing it out with a blow dryer, but I usually don't have the time or inclination for this much work, and besides, I'm not sure that's the healthiest thing to do with hair.)
Meanwhile, I got into a mood and stopped trimming my goatee, which is now almost as long as my hand is wide (what's that, like 4 inches across?) It was okay all summer, but now my hair is really looking longer, and I'm starting to think the long hair AND the freakish goatee are too much together, so I think it's time to trim the goat WAY back to just a quarter inch or so. I thought about letting the rest of the beard grow in - and I've done that for about a month now - but I'm just not sure it's gonna work. I'm thinking maybe in another year when the hair is long enough to pull back I'll try to go a year without shaving. Meanwhile, one idiosyncratic feature is probably enough for me. :)
Anyone else ever try to do the hair and beard at the same time? How do you keep from going crazy?

I did it years ago. It was too much...people wanted to kill me...
with their dagger eyes.
If you have the courage to do BOTH at the same time...good luck.
Had to remove my beard for a VERY ODD REASON: My skin is very, very...
sensitive and my beard hairs (brown, red, blond...need I say more?)
were too irritating to my skin every time they moved even slightly.
As if I had toothpicks coming out of my skin.
I'd tug at the beard till hairs came out because of the irritation.
Maybe a shorted beard would make growing your head hair easier?

Your last haircut was in early March... and you had a small trim in late May... What a coincidence, because that directly corresponds with my 'haircut' and 'trim' dates! I don't know what to tell you about the 'goatee and long hair' thing... I'd just keep both. Good luck! BTW, how long is your hair now?

well i kinda did that and its not so bad
i let both my hair and beard grow at the same time
(i was orginally clean shaven and had a buzzcut)
and i havent trimed either since
and now i bare a freaky resemblence to ZZ Top
HAHA LOL
the beard and longhair combo actually looks better TOGETHER then they do apart but there are exceptions like
a full beard looks kinds out of place with REALLY short hair
in my opinion if your going to do it go all the way
long hair and a full beard looks better then longhair and just a long gotee
but that's just MY opinion, do whatever makes you happy

Patience is the only thing that'll get you through the hair/beard situation. I never caught much grief on my hair, UNTIL I let my beard grow. It was also uncomfortable. Now it's about 4.25 inches long, though, and the comfort factor has gone way up, and I've actually started getting compliments. The two features (beard and longhair) go together very well.
