tying small ponytail bands

I like being able to change my hair style by tying it back at work. I've used a cloth covered black elastic scunchie that fits around my wrist. I just tie it around a bunch of hair at the back of my head and pull the band off my wrist, around the hair bunch, and then double it twice.
Now that my hair is longer, the end of my ponytail gets all bushy...I've found that tying a 2nd band at the tail's end helps to minimize this. I have these small clear polyband by Cosmopolitan for holding the ends of pigtails. It sez on the package, "will not pull out, tangle, or damage any type of hair." They're almost unnoticeable and the say the won't damage hair. How do u tie them on the end of your hair and is this claim that it won't damage hair true-they're not cloth covered but they are smooth? They'll fit around 2 fingers, but I had trouble pulling it off my fingers and around the hair.

I went to CVS Pharmacy today and they had Scunci brand elastic bands. I know rubber bands are a no-no. What about elastic? They're not covered in cloth like scrunchies. Are these safe?

I don't think I'd use'em. Probably still going to pull hairs out. So, I stick with the full-size scrunchies. Not the little ones, but the regular ones. I've had the least amount of hairs being pulled out with the big ones. Even though, some of us might feel too femme with them on the head, I've never had an issue with someone thinking it's strange, or calling me "ma'am".

most of the damage to hair from bands comes either
1) from the movement of your hair and head if the band is too tight, so hairs get pulled out or broken
- solution, don't make the bands too tight, or else make them a little further away from your head so that there is an inch or so of hair which acts as a flexible joint
or
2) when taking the band off
- ease the hair out gently. If the band is tight, ease the hair in the middle (which is not touching the band) first, that loosens the band and enables the rest to be loosened without damage
As to needing a second band, you can try braiding your hair at night with a thick band at the end of the braid. For most people, this results in a ponytail during the day which hangs in the right direction. This works even if you can only do a three or four inch braid.
Good luck
