growing long hair...

I have naturally wavy hair (so it kind of "puffs" up), and I have been growing since about March/April. Are there any recommendations people could toss me for keeping my hair growing, and making it possibily semi flatter? Thanks.

Here is the whole case in point when it comes to growing your hair long. It all has to do with a person surviving what we call the Awkward Stage.
Your first question was "How do I keep my hair growing?": My answer is this. Leave it alone, don't cut or trim it by any means and try not to think too much about it for say, the next year and a half to two years maybe except when grooming and washing it. Paying too much attention to it will only make it seem like it is taking forever to grow. Hair grows on average a 1/2 inch a month. Some lucky individuals achieve a little more, when some others get less. The end results will be well worth the long wait.
Your second question was "How do I make it possibly semi flatter?" There are immediate ways to make it flatter and that would involve styling gels, wearing hats and the like. Or there is once again the waiting process. What I mean by this is, as your hair gets longer its own gradually added weight from growth will pull it down making it flatter. This is one of the many rewards for those who persevere and live through the dreaded Awkward Stage. Hope this gives you some helpfull insight into the magnificent realm of long hair. If you stand the test of the dreaded Awkward Stage, you will be greatly glad you did. I am myself still in the awkward stage but slowely closing in on the end. Can't wait till I can get it all into a ponytail. Then I will be satisfied. Peace!!!!!

I can't add anything to that. It's excellent advice. You may not look as you want to for a few months, but evertually length will solve the problem, as the weight of the hair will straighten it and make it hang well. In my opinion, wavy hair looks a lot better when really long than straight hair, even if the awkward stage is a bit more awkward.

As a longhair-friendly men's stylist I totally agree with you both. When one of my clients expresses a desire to "let his hair grow", throughout the process I remove ONLY unsightly neck fuzz (which will never amount to anything in the grand scheme of things) and check to make sure all the rest is growing in evenly--a definite plus when going through the awkward stage. And, all the time, give lots of encouragment and ideas for "what to do with it?" (transitional styling hints).
