This was the exact reason I gave up on long hair every time I had tried. Luckily, the nice people here were able to set me straight. First off, it really depends on how curly your hair is. If you've got the African type hair (Pardon my whiteness) then you'll probably be getting the afro. If it's something to the degree of that guy from American Idol (Justin, I think) then you're probably looking at some variation on the afro. If your curls are more loose, then you've probably just been having problems with combing your hair after it has dried. This will lead to the trademark "poofiness" of the curly-haired. I'd suggest parting it in the middle while still damp. (It's best not to comb hair when it's wet, but our type doesn't have much choice.) You might also look into different styling products. Alchohol-free gel works really well. Eventually, your hair's own weight will bring it down.
Currently, my bangs are just past the tip of my nose, and the sides and back are about 2 inches. I can part and comb it to the sides with no problem except the "wings" you'll get. (My suggestion: Learn to love them. It's easier to get through the akward stage that way.) But if you do stick with it, you'll get great-looking hair. And there's always straighteners and relaxers if you're going totally mental over the curls. (Not good for your hair, but hey, do what you've gotta do.)
Try the link at the bottom. It's got great info on growing hair, and a section I found especially helpful on the pros and cons of curly hair vs. straight.
Is it just me, or are these responses just repeating what everyone else has said, and adding a little more?
