How do I fix this?

Last week my mom conned me in to getting a haircut before my great aunt's funeral. About 4-5 inches were cut off and while I didnt exactly like the way it looked I tipped the girl and went home. After I took a shower and let my hair dry I looked at it in the mirror and I was totally shocked at what I saw. I have NO idea how she did this, but it looks like my hair is cut to two nearly distinct lengths on either side of my head and in the back for some reason there is a small but very obvious bit of hair missing. What the heck am I supposed to do? It looks like crap. I got back to school today and I had a few people ask "Did you get a haircut" and when I answered yes in a pissed off tone they've replied "Yeah that didnt work out too good...". What do I do now? I cant just leave it this way, it will just grow lopsided...how the heck did this happen? I have several concerts over the next two weeks and I look like total crap (these are choral concerts, not rock shows, so I cant really get away with it). Plus I dont know how to go about finding a place to get a haircut here at school that wont majorly fuck up like this girl did. I'm a poor college student in a very, very, very expensive Ivy League town and I dont know how I can afford one of these expensive places. Should I find a phonebook and just call around for hours and prices?

And to top it all off, there isnt much hair left in back to cut off now anyway. Its chin-length (if I had a deformed chin, that is) and I dont know how someone would go about trimming this much more. Its totally strange looking, on the sides I have major curls and in back its straight (of course this is partially natural, partially the result of a bad haircut). So what do I do? Should I ask to have it tapered somewhat, or will that probably result in some psychotic stylist going overboard and cutting off waaaaay too much hair? Please help!!!
