Story of my hair, should I shave it?

This may get long, but here is my story.
I've wanted long hair for years now and in August of 2001 I began from a bull cut to grow my hair out. After a few months I hit the beginning of the "akward stages." I have think wavy hair and it curls on the bottom but is for the most part straight. It got down to my neck and I didn't like those rings and was running low on patience so I got it cut up a bit so the sides of my hair could be even with the length of the back.
After a few more months I decided to get one more haircut and this is when it got bad. Stupid lady first of all shaves off my wonderful side burns when I told her to shave them DOWN because I wanted them short in thickness. But they grow back soon enough, that wasn't the bad part. I told her I wanted to avoid having the bottom of my hair curling up super bad under my ears. She ends up giving me a freaking wedge cut. Normal length on the sides and short multi-layers on the back. I looked like a total idiot. It was February 2002 by this time.
So then in May things started getting better and I was in an akward stage again. It seemed my hair was growing out like many of the posters hair have said. It was fine until the bottom of my ears where it was all bushy. So I want to see if I could get that trimmed to look decent. Well, the lady trimmed it and I had to cut a little bit off my total length too. Not too bad but it only added more layers to the back of my hair.
So now here I am today, my hair is almost to the bottom of my neck, but the akward stage is almost over but not going out without a fight. I have at least 4 different layers on the back of my hair, the sides are all one layer. I have two distinct layers, and when I tie my hair in a tail dry it looks like a flower. lol@me. It looks good wet but my hair isn't long enough to tie in a tail and have all of it stay in there for the day. So here is where I am getting at:
All of my hair goes into a tail and with gel it will stay except for 2 places: the tiny bits by my ears. Should I just shave the hair off right by my ear ( buzz it straight across from just right above my sideburns level with the top of my ear), or just wait another 2 months so all my hair can be happy in a tail? :-\
(Theres a lot of wrestling fans here so) Sort of like HHH's hair (notice it's shaved right above his ear and all around. I want it like that but not shaved as much and also not all around the bottom of the back like his).
Hope you could make it this far without dedicated your time elsewhere.
Loren

Oh heck, you've waited this long, what's a couple of more months? I say just let it all grow. Seems to me, cutting has been your enemy, so why continue to consort with the enemy?

you guys both make some good points. I think I will shave it slightly so that if I dont like it it wont look too funny while it grows back.

I had a bad experience with sideburns before I decided to get an undercut, so if you want to have that shaved side burn style like HHH I think it's a good idea. It will make it much easier to get your hair into a nice tail and it will look neater (I'm not just talking about now, but when your hair gets longer too)
