How Awful! I feel really sorry for the kid. It's a real shame when you have to wake up to see that your so called friends have destroyed your hair while you were asleep. Who can you trust nowadays?

I second that, its never happened to me, and I sure hope for my friends that it never does or they'll hear from me big time!

I'm not a parent, so I can't speak from experience, but I think all parents should let their kids look as they choose, provided that they don't dress too revealingly or wear something that could land them in serious jeopardy (i.e. gang clothing, racist/sexist language, etc.)Kids will have their whole adult lives finding out about dress codes and appearances in the work force. The same applies to hair. If a child wants to have long hair or dye it any color of the rainbow, I say let them. It's the only time of your life when you can really be yourself without having to deal with so many restrictions on how one can look (not that they don't have dress codes in school, but they're a lot less strict than codes found in the workforce).

To be only 22 (info gathered from the "age poll") you sound somewhat more mature than others. I agree with you totally, but you've got to remember that kids can be just as cruel as adults to one another if there is another who stands out & is a little different than the rest.
I am 34 and know all about the "dress codes" in the working world. I have held "office environment" types of jobs ever since graduating from college in '91. You definitely have to be very picky as to what jobs and what companies you apply to - do your homework before you ever even consider an interview. I have been fortunate thus far that my hair has not gotten in the way, but I truly could be making more money if I was willing to look "the corporate america" part. Truthfully, the office shit is beginning to bore me and I am looking at others avenues "outside" of the office environment.
As for kids - my wife is presently pregnant with our first child. People ask me all the time if my kid (if it's a boy) will have long hair like me? I tell them "NO!" I have seen little boys with long hair and it just doesn't look good to me for some reason or another - probably because their hair is a decision made by their parents and the kid has nothing to do with it at all. When my kid gets to the age to make his own decisions as to the length of his hair, then & only then, will I let him do whatever it is that he wants to do. In my opinion, any kid below "the teenage years" is really not ready to be making their own decisions yet...sure they are more than capable of making a few decisions, but not "all" decisions. Kids are very cruel and I just do not want to put my son through the cruelty of others making fun of him (in elementary school) because he is the only boy with long hair. "I don't know why I have long hair like a girl...my Dad just said this is how I have to wear it?!" Again, once he is of the right age then he can do whatever it is he wishes to do. I was a junior in high school when I started letting my hair grow out...got my ears pierced, tattoos, etc. shortly after that.

I remember one of Madonna's songs "Girl's Want To Have Fun". Well, WHY can't boys have the EQUAL RIGHT to have fun (within reason, of course)also? In my opinion, this 12 year old boy should NOT have to cut a part of his body just because of this incident. He should ask his mom, "Where are my equal rights?"
i beleive that was cind lauper-nt-

...Actually [just for correctness sake] the song you're referring to was by Cindi Lauper back in the mid '80's. Not that it matters, though...
I believe evasive action is needed

1. He could call up the National Children's helpline for advice
2. He could find a close relative who doesn't mind his hair being long and stay with them
3. He could stay at a friends house until his mother sees that she'd rather have him there with long hair, than away from home with short.

some prank... how did 'gary' react toward the so-called 'friends' & their prank? that people are willing to screw with him & his hair when he's sleeping suggest a lack of concern for any consequences. maybe he should learn some self-defense and take up some weight-lifting.
gum removal can be hard on the hair- are you sure the cut isn't intended to remove damage? mom may just want gary's hair to look decent & doesn't want him to sport a crappy looking head of hair- whatever the length.
whatever the case-
he is only 12 and must live under mom's roof & therefore should do as she says. if she is legislating a new short length in response to the incident she might want to consider the message being sent to the vandals who messed with his hair in the first place.

The mom seems to have suddenly changed. You all know very well that it takes a long time to grow waist length hair. She must have at least tolerated his hair for a long time. Are there any details that are being left out? Speaking as a parent of 2 kids, she is being too harsh based on the info we have been given. Gary should try talking with his mom about why he wants to keep his hair long. There is probably a compromise that could be reached without him losing all of his hair. Most parents do want the best for their kids and want them to be happy.

That mom sounds as though she's blaming the victim insted of gettin mad at the vandals. Does this mean that if a vandal egged her car, she'd dump her car in the nearest landfill instead of cleaning it up and doing her best to find the vandals and prevent a repeat?
Maybe Gary needs to point that out to her adding that he'll be the one responsible for defending himself and his hair. He could then enroll in weight training and tae kwan do courses- which would intimidate his enemies and make him even MORE of a chick magnet!

Is this a real story? Every once in a while someone posts about a kid out there about age 12 with waist long hair.

yes, but usually the poster poses as a mom looking for support & photo trading, doesn't respond to the collateral "what a great mom" posts and just vanishes. tells me that it's likely a deviant character trolling for pix to satisfy a fetish. in this case at least there was no call for other moms to email and provide photos-- yadda yadda...
