Good natural shampoos?

I went to one of those "natural stores" today expecting to find one or two types of shampoos but I was overwhelmed by how many they had. So I would like to know if anyone can recommend a good natural shampoo & conditioner for thick, rough, frizzy hair which I would like to make smoother and have more bounce/less frizz.

Herbal Essences conditioner claims to be like 95% natural (or something like that) and works very well

Herbal Essences is hardly a "natural" shampoo, though. It still has all the harsh detergents - sodium/ammonium lauryl/laureth sulfate (I forget which combination Herbal Essesnces has... heh). SixStringThing, I'm not sure what type to recommend for your hair, but I use stuff by "Avalaon Organic Botanicals" and it works well. I've also heard good things about "Aubrey Organics" products.

If your definition of "natural" means a shampoo with no chemical preservatives, there is no such thing. Without preservatives (or refrigeration) your "natural" shampoo would have the shelf life of fruit peeled and sliced: rotten in no time at all. So even your most "natural" shampoo contains some chemical preservatives. Ingredients are always listed according to volume so check your labels. The first ingredient will be water; it's better if the water is "deionized". Be aware also that the remainder of ingredients can be listed either by chemical name or common name: for example, cocamidopropyl betaine is actually extracted from coconut oil--a "natural" ingredient good for the hair though at first glance its chemical name may not appear so. Become an educated consumer and you should have no problem finding a shampoo that is both healthy for your hair and leaves it in the condition you Desire: managebly smooth and shiny.
