RETURN TO LONGER HAIR?

I recently did my yearly stint as a one day specialty teacher in the local Elementary School. For years the boys have looked for the most part like a "Lawn-Mower" had run over their heads. ALL the same.........ALWAYS the same year after year. In short: "Clones." I found it rather refreshing and was completely surprised this year when to my astonishment "Long Hair" was suddenly evident! I would say that about 20% of the boys were sporting some sort of "long" hair! The longest was some 4th grader with hair nearly to the mid-back. Many looked like "awkward stage" kids,(but this was NOT dirty shabby hair) so that you could tell that this length hair was most likely intentional. The remainder had at least 3"-4" growth.........kind of a trip back to the 80's. Yes it was quite refreshing. But most interesting was the fact (and this may just be myself), that those with the longer hair looked VERY healthy, and the longer hair brought-out a nice Human feature to their faces that seemed to be most natural. The "Lawn-Mower" group looked to be (most cases) artifical or rather perhaps sickly as if they were going through some sort of Cancer Therapy. The "Long-hairs" at this particular school (by the way) were NOT the trouble-makers which I was glad to note because so many in society attribute Long Hair on Men with trouble which we all know is untrue. Yes, perhaps this was an isolated case, I don't know. Any of you other guys out there starting to notice Longer Hair making a come-back in your area?
a nice Human feature to their faces...

YES...I have noticed more longHairs...but honestly...
not many.
I'm glad to hear though, that the parents of these kids
are at least open-minded enough to permit the longer
hair...

Well, I've noticed kids that actually HAVE some hair recently. I s'pose that's a good start! I haven't seen nearly as many buzz cuts as I did a year or so ago.
I have seen a kid around here, prob'ly 13 or so, who has hair just past his shoulders, but no mid-back lengths as yet.
Back when I was in highschool, my best friend and I had some of the longest hair in the whole school, and that was back when long hair was IN! And, yes, we were amongst the population to be considered 'trouble-makers';) But always innocent fun, never anything destructive... well, the boathouse explosion was destructive I guess, but that was an ACCIDENT! And this is getting off topic. Sorry. Just adding my 2 cents worth.

Well I'm 17 and can only comment for my age group but I agree, longer hair is definately in. By longer hair I mean awkward stage hair but it's better than a buzzcut! There's quite a few "real longhairs" at my school including a teacher, and they each have their own "look" which is nice to see because it shows that longhaired guys are not all the same (the dirty, grunge stereotype) There's one that always dresses in really nice trendy clothes, two going for the hippy look, a "death metal guy" as I call him that looks just like zakk wylde, some dirty grungy lookin ones, an african american guy with a long AFRO, and this one guy with the ugliest, frizziest hair I have ever seen... but he somehow makes it look good and quite a few others, lots of variety! Then there's TONS of people in the awkward stage and there's still the few guys walking around with buzzcuts (the "gangster" people, most are troublemakers and constantly start fights with each other and even with the cops) So yea, longer hair is in and it's not the troublemakers who are sporting it. By the way, I don't know if anyone here has Abercrombie catalogs but it's really popular among alot of teens and none of the guys in it ever have really short hair, not too long either but it's a start.

Thanks for writing. I rather thought the older High School students "must" be on the same treck from what I see now and again all of a sudden appearing around the town in which I live. After so many "Buzzcut years," now I rather feel that the pendelum is starting to swing quickly in the other direction. And yes, I agree that from years past...........it was usually NOT the "Longhairs" that were the trouble makers. Quite the opposite. I think there is something to be said for the "awkward stage." Wild, crazy, untamed..........call it what you want. But it IS a look all to it's own, and to my eyes actually seems very individualistic. I am in that stage now myself and happen to be enjoying every minute of it. Something new every day. PREDICTION: By the year 2005 the "Buzzcutters" will have had their day and will be the minority. Fashion trend in the very near future might just be an "Awkward-Stage" style look...........and be very popular at that!

Well actually, while I was in school I was always in the awkward stage, but it wasnt very popular (buzzcut wasnt the majority though). I didn't mind it, I'm kind of a loner, independant type of a guy who holds to his principles and I'm everything BUT a conformist!
I made the mistake of cutting it last time because I thought a girl I loved would like me more after. Yeah she liked it better...but not me. I figure I wasted my time with her (a damn long time if you ask me) and that I shouldnt have cut it to impress her 3 years ago...
Now I know better and won't cut my hair to please anyone but myself (and I like it long so there's no chance of it happening)

having done some christmas shopping & taken on some mall crowds i've been able to observe that longer hair seems to be gaining acceptance- while still a minority, there were younger (high school age) longhairs at the mall... one in particular with close to mid-back length hair- seeming to be holding court with a larger group of teens including several young ladies :-). he said nothing to me but clearly noticed my hair (waist length). i imagine i gave him something to shoot for. heh.
