Bleaching

Hi, a lurker here..
I think I asked this question quite some time back, but I totally forgot what you guys said. I've got just slightly past waist length hair (only a few locks reach past it so far). I've been thinking on and off for a long time about bleaching my hair, and then toning it to ice white or light silvery grey. The color it's at now is light brown/dirty blonde. Sort of a tarnished brass/bronze color? (I never have been able to figure out the diff between light brown and dirty blond.. i hear different things from different people). Or actually, my hair is currently dark purple, since I dyed it recently with a semi-perm dye. But it is fading now. I have never bleached it before.
Anyway, what kind of damage would I be looking at here? I would not be averse to keeping it well conditioned with oils and the like, if that's necesssary, seeing that I often go a week or two without shampooing my hair anyway, so it already gets fairly oily to begin with.
Further, if I did decide to go ahead with it, where would I go to have this done? I simply don't trust myself to do it, nor do I trust any old run of the mill hair care person. It'd have to be someone who really knows what they're doing. If I do this, I suppose I'll test it out on only one lock of hair first, to assess the damage and see if I even like the color. But even then, I don't want to completely ruin that lock of hair. It might not be much overall, but it'd still be very noticable if I were to have to cut it off or something. Or perhaps I'd just go with the single bleached lock alone. Would certainly be less of a P.I.T.A. to do the roots on every few weeks than a full head of hair.
And for that matter, what about eyebrows? I know it's generally said to be a bad idea to bleach them, but I have heard there are special bleaching cremes made specifically for that. Anyone know about these, and if they work well? Or if they really even exist?
Thanks!

Don't do it. I will damage your hair, no matter what the stylists tell you, and it is a pain to take care of the roots all the time, and this causes further damage. Also, it will never look natural, even if you do something about the eyebrows. The rest of your body, including skin tone, etc., was made for the color you have, and bleaching will always look fake. However, if you want to look fake, that's up to you, I guess.

Bleaching can be rough on the hair however there are some safer products on the market but don't do it yourself. Also find a stylist that isn't so busy they aren't watching whats going on, thats where problems exist. Bleaching all the hair can be quiet a job, you might want to start with some hilights using SunGlitz or BioGlitz color. An alternative to this would be to color the hair two shades lighter then hilight over it. If the stylist uses Bioglitz and Sunglitz the hair will be in excellent shape. I do this to my own hair and its in great shape.
