ok how to tell if ur hair is damaged if you have no clue about this sort of thing?
before i started actually growing my hair out i bleached it blonde while it was around 1 inch in length.. then i got bored of the blonde and dyed it perma black.. needless to say i have 1 inch worth of black hair at the tips of my hair ontop [ was spiked hair style so nothing on sides]
what i want to know is . will leaving the dead hair [ i presume its dead anyhow ] cause my hair to grow slower then say choping off the 1 inch of black hair and leaving all my hair to grow naturally brown.
again im not sure if my hair is damaged or not cuz hair care has NEVER been a high point for me but it seems everyone is recommending it if u want ur hair to grow long ??

Depending on what your hair feels like when undamaged, it will probably feel coarse, tend to tangle easily, have split ends, break easily, etc.
Just assume that it is damaged considering what you have done with it so far. But you don't have to cut it all off and start over if your goal is to grow it longer, just take care of it from this point on.
All hair is already "dead" but it will grow out of your head at the same rate regardless of what condition it is in (it may not last long or look any good if you don't take care of it).
The way to deal with it is get periodic trims (one inch isn't much at all to trim off) to eliminate split ends and uneveness due to breakage and makes it easier to comb or brush through also reducing future damage.
