I always hear about people putting coconut (or any other kind) of oil in their hair. What exactly does this do and do you buy a special kind for your hair or what? Thanks.

OiL is one thing...and though it is generally good (in moderation)...
anyBuddy who wants to *control* the hair during any kind
of an awkward phase...would probably do better with a gel or spray.
To avoid 'poofiness' the hairs must CLING to each other for 'support'...
otherwise they will FLY IN EVERY DIRECTION with every breeze
or bang of the head...

Nothing special about coconut oil, as far as I know. I just like the smell of it as opposed to other types, like olive oil. I use it as a conditioner, and to control frizzies and such a bit.
moisturizes....cheap

I have been using coconut oil in my hair for around 2 years now. I've used baking coconut oil and special coconut oil for the hair (they're both good-but if you're in a cool climate then pure coconut oil...or baking coconut oil turns into a solid or thick paste at cool temperatures and needs to be heated up to turn it back into an oil). I've found both to be good for leaving your hair feeling moisturized, gives hair more weight, & is a good detangler after u shampoo it out.
I've also read & been told that it strengthens your hair roots, thus preventing balding.
You can pick up enough to last for a couple months (I use it once a week) at Indian markets for around $2.50 (I use Parachute brand-they make a coconut hair oil also that has been processed so that it doesn't get solid at cool temperatures....I've found this to be useful in the winter).
If you're not near an Indian market, Indian web sites are all over the place and coconut oil is plentiful in Southern India!
Hope this helps!

I use straight olive oil in my hair. I just buy it at the grocery store. I make a mixture of about 1/3 olive oil to 2/3 water, and put a small amount in my hair wheneevr I wash it, thus restoring the natural oil that washing strips away.
