How to deal with damaged hair?

I need some advice on how to deal with damaged hair. My hair is very thick, which makes it very hard to comb or brush. No matter how careful I am I always wind up breaking alot of hair when brushing because it is so thick and it gets very tangled. I also lose alot when I wash it,no matter how gently I wash it. I have lots of little broken hairs sticking out everywhere. How should I deal with this? Do I need some kind of special condtioner or something? I don't know what to do with it. It is starting to look pretty bad,but I really don't want to cut it. I have been growing it for over 17 months now,and I can't stand the thoughts of cutting it. It would be like losing a part of myself now. Also what is the best kind of brush to use on very thick hair that gets very tangled? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I used to have very damaged hair when it was dyed, but I've since grown all my natural colored hair out again. What I used to get through it was lots of leave-in conditioner. Potion 9 by the Sebastian Collection worked the best for me. It's a salon brand so you're gonna pay a little more money but it's worth it. It works exceedingly well. As for brushes...not sure about that. I just used the same one I always used.

If your hair is thick and curly, you shouldn't brush it when it is dry. Only when wet and thoroughly conditioned. Hope this helps.

The best way to brush it is by simply running your fingers through your hair. Using a comb or a brush will always be harder on your hair.
