If you have really long hair you will probably want to give up stage diving. I was getting mine pulled if it was loose OR in a braid. There is always some jerk who needs to pull on it. If you feel someone grab and pull your hair and you are facing the ceiling then just thrash you fist in the direction of the pull.
If you slam dance then it may get roughed up a bit (mainly from sweat and tangles).
Don't let it stop you if you really like being in the pit but just take care of it after the show.

An added bonus for me when you go to a concert is that you can show off your hair in motion :) I usually tie it up at some point during the show and you do have to pay for it since the detangling job when you get back can be a mammoth task.
It's always cool to get pictures like this caught, too!

Muaha, I headbang the whole time, and so is everyone else, no one cares, it's a concert! Get sweaty and dirty! that includes your hair :D
