awkward stage problem

Hi all,
I am at 9 1/2 months now and deep deep deep in the awkward stage. I straightened my hair from time to time so that makes the awkward stage tolerable. Ok, ok - that’s the background so here’s the problem. My buddies and I like to go to bars and stuff but I find that after a few hours in a hot, crowded and sweaty bar the magical powers of my straightening iron begin to wear off and I begin to look a little like Ronald McDonald.
Now, I understand that perspiration and stuff are the cause of this but as I looked around the other night at some girls with similar length hair to mine - they didn't seem to be suffering from the 'cotton candy' hair style I was developing.
I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on how to control this. I’m reluctant to use hairspray or other chemicals but am curious to know how females are able to prevent this effect.
All suggestion (minus 'stop going to bars') welcome.
Thanks guys.
Your hair won't cooperate!

At 9 1/2 months, you ARE deeply into the AwkwardStage®...
Good luck...hang in there...
Okay, first of all, if you think these girls just shampoo their hair
and that's it...you are fooling yourself...
They use mousse & gel & hairspray & whatever else they need to get
the results they're looking for.
'Poofiness'is really easy to understand. It's caused by hairs separating from each other, and not cooperating & not getting along.
When your hair is WET, the hairs are sort of forced to lay down together.
Gels, mousses, sprays make hairs 'attractive' to each other...that is...
they work together as a group.
Until you are well out of this awkward stage, you are probably going
to have to use these products to make your hairs work together.
Experiment. Try putting different strengths of gel into DAMP hair...
and then styling. This should fight off humidity & sweat, etc.
Or mousse in damp hair (before styling) might do the trick.
Again, good luck...
