washing hair

Mmmkay, here's my second post.
I've been noticing a lot of questions about shampooing hair lately, and I decided that I need attention, so I'm gonna post my own. A lot of people seem to agree that washing twice or three times a week is good. But I'm thinking of swearing off shampooing altogether until I get through the akward stage, and my hair's long enough to tie back. Or at least limiting washing to twice a month, or something.
Here's the reasoning: My hair is the thick/curly kind we've heard so much about. And after I wash it, it poofs up all over my head. After a few shampoo-less days however, the oils help control it and keep it in place. Sort of like a natural gel.
I've heard about people giving up shampooing, and only washing with water before. (I think it was on Bill Choisser's page.) Does anyone have any thoughts/experiences/advice they can give me here? I don't like the poofiness, but if shampooing is necessary, I think I'd be able to work it into my schedule whenever I get a few days off work, and I can wear a hat. Thanks.

if you don't wash hair...
* It might smell bad after a while...it happens...
* Hair oil CAN irritate your scalp and cause itchiness after a while.
* and what about fungus? I don't know anything about that except...
you don't want it.
How about an herbal something or other made without soap?!

Bill does make some valid points regarding what we did throughout history. We didn't always have shampoo.
I shampoo every Sunday and sometimes on Wednesdays.
For you, I'd recommend once a week washing, and using leave in conditioners to tame the mane! Visit a beauty supply store and ask them what they'd recommend for a leave-in. It'll keep your hair under control...even on the days you wash.

I think there's a chance you'll do just fine if you only wash with water. Make sure it's cold water, and let it run down your hair for 30 seconds or more.
Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

Hey, just experiment and find what works for you and then stick with it.

dude, you have to wash your hair. you might think the build-up of natural oil is good, but what about the dirt and sweat that will build up? eventually your hair will stink. when you shower, try putting on a leave-in conditioner or something to replace the oil that gets stripped away. but you have to wash your hair!
