Use whatever you need...whenever you need it.
By the way, they also sell spray gel...

Was a bit of a lifesaver during the awkward stage, only use spray if I'm trying strange hairstyles nowadays.

I have been using gel during my awkward stage. It keeps hair as neat as possible as long as you don't touch it or comb it. Gelled hair can be fixed by sprinkling with water and flattening it down with the hands. My hair gets a lot of white flakes that look like dandruff but are probably dried gel particles. I have to shake them out in the morning if I don't rinse or shampoo. Alternatives to gel are hats and bandanas, neither of which look very "corporate". I did wear hats in the very early stages but it wrecked my hairstlye and didn't help train it. These days I carry a bandana around so if my hair gets wildly out of control I can cover it up. But I depend on gel.
