That interminable awkward stage?

I've been pretty much letting my hair grow out since I had it cut for a show I was in last March. I'm very fortunate to work in a place where no one cares how long my hair is, and I've kept busy enough to not think too much about my hair (which is when I get in trouble with it.)
A day or so ago I saw a photo of me last spring. Boy, I didn't realize just how much my hair had grown over the last nine months. It's down to about the bottom of my ears on the sides, the very front bangs are down to my mouth, and while it doesn't seem like it's that long, it sure looks it.
But now I'm on hiatus, Spring is approaching, and I'm in another show. This time it's The Music Man which is set in 1912. I *think* I can get away with slicking it all back if I can just get it to taper down to the top of my collar at the very back, which will allow me to keep all the length I've got on top and the sides, and I'm HOPING (if I can get the right cut, and I've got stylist friend who is also growing his hair and is therefore sensitive to my needs so that shouldn't be a problem) that it will now continue to grow out but maybe a little less shaggy looking in the back. I hope. It certainly seems the better choice than what I've been thinking of, which is more of an Owen Wilson shaggy with bangs kind of thing - less daily styling required but I'm still really hoping to hit a good foot of hair by the end of this year.
So there's my state-of-the-hair report for the top of the year. If I find any pictures of my hair I'll try to upload them (but don't hold your breath, I'm working against the double whammy of AOL on a Mac and it's not conducive at all to uploading photos.)

Since it's set in 1912, most men wore hats all the time when outdoors and would only briefly tip the hat when acknowledging a lady. How about pulling your growth into a samurai-type tail atop your crown- and keeping it all underneath your hat onstage until just before the the curtain call when you could undo the tie then stuff your locks underneath the hat letting them flow down when tipping your hat and bowing to the audience? It can't hurt to ask your director and wardrobe people if they'd be willing to do that for you.
