I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but have any of you experienced job discrimination b/c of long hair? Does anyone know of jobs that do not discriminate against men w/long hair.

I'm 34 and have had long hair since the age of 16/17 years of age...I started growing my hair out the summer before my senior year of high school. I graduated from college in 1991 with a degree in Marketing...very dumb choice on my part, but a few of my friends were going that route so I did as well so that we could all go to classes together. My history since 1991: delivery truck driver, warehouse manager, accounts payable dept. for local county government, inventory auditor / inventory controller, and presently an account manager for a catalogue company. I've moved around alot because I have increased my salary with each new job position. So far I have had no problems with my hair to today's date, but I have indeed went on some interviews where I have gotten some bad vibes. At first you are a little dissapointed, but in the end you probably wouldn't have wanted to work for that company anyway. My biggest problem is trying to find myself - you know, what type of job would make me the happiest...so far have not found that...the only thing I have found so far is that the "office environment" doesn't hold my interest and I get bored with it quickly.
Most long hairs are in some form or fashion of the computer industry. This industry seems to be very tolerable to long haired men...I sometimes wish I knew how to write computer programs...but I do think I would get bored with that rather quickly. Other fields I have noticed are mass communications (radio / tv), medical fields (x-ray technicians, etc.), lawyers...but you first have to establish yourself first before you start letting the hair grow, etc. You just have to do a little bit of research for yourself to see what the "norm" is around your area. Here in the Atlanta area there seems to be alot of long hairs, but there are still plenty of stereotypes around here as well...I imagine the stereotypes will never die...you just have to deal with it the best that you can.
Another major point that I see is one simple word..."CLEANLINESS"!!! Please make sure that your hair is always clean & healthy looking...you would be amazed at how much more tolerable people are toward your hair as long as you keep it clean. You - yourself - need to look clean as well.
Just do your research on a company before you approach them for an interview...use common sense. If they have a problem with your hair, then you probably wouldn't want to work for them anyway...besides, they are probably going to have some other issues as well. You can do eveything in your power and some people are just not going to get it, but don't let that get you down. The golden rule is this, "It's not what you know, but who you know" when looking for a job. Good Luck to you...I'm looking for a new job myself...I presently drive an hour & a half (one way) to and from work and the traffic is absolutely about to kill me!
Believe it or not you don't have to settle for "manual labor" jobs just because you have long hair...there are other jobs out there you just have to look for them. Do you homework and keep your eyes and ears open.

So far I haven't had any problems except for one place I worked. I had to keep it short to "maintain their image". That was in 1985 though.
I worked at Sears Service [in Phoenix] for a while doing electronic repairs. No problems.
I've worked at several technical places and none of them had any problems with an employee's hair length.
I currently work in electronic/computer repair for an international company. One guy there has hair to his waist -- often worn down; but always clean.
I would have to say that something in computers/electronics is probably the industry with the least discrimination against long hairs. Don't know for sure, though.
Good luck.
