What do split ends look like?

What do split ends actually look like, because I want to cut them out individually rather than go for a proper cut, since the hair is only at about 7-8 inches after 18 months. Can someone post some pics of split ends, rather than just describe them. Thanks

Just look at individual hairs. Look very closely. A hair
that has more than one ending is split. I seen some with three endings.
Slit ends refers to what happens to each individual hair. If a
group of hairs together have that poofy or messy look, that's probably
because they are all different LENGTHS, but not necessarily split ends.

If you want to cut out split ends individually, you have too much time on your hands. Plus, your ends will become "uneven" giving you that unkept, stringy look. Just go to a stylist and insist that you dont want to lose any length, just clean it up. Or tell them not to take off more than an inch. Do this every 3-4 months, and I am sure you will be happy with the results (and you won't even notice the hair they took off

Split ends can take on a variety of appearances. Generally, portions of the edge of the shaft split off, sort of splinter-like, from around the perimiter of the hair. Sometimes there will be only one or two -- sometimes there will be a lot.
Combing or brushing vigorously causes the ends of the hair to behave like a whip cracking. This quick thrashing of the end of the hair causes damage, which, if it spreads, can turn into splits.
To remove just the splits, take a small lock of your brushed hair and twist it tightly. The ends will stick out and you can trim them off.
If you would like to see where there is damage on your hair that has not yet split, view it closely in bright sunlight. The damaged areas (usually just a spot along the shaft) appears lighter, almost as if the hair shaft were transparent except for the translucent damaged spot.

A split end is a split hair. Look at your hair and imagine it split in two.
If your hair is not very long yet then you probably won't have to worry about split ends too much. As your hair gets longer and you don't get your hair cut as frequently then trimming off individual split ends starts to become more important and it becomes easier to pull your hair around and look at the ends.
Check out the "Hair Science" link on my website and you will get much more info on stuff like split ends.
